Five Important Steps To Keep Your Hair Healthy

Up until the 1970s, it was generally believed that a woman's hair should not be washed more than once a week. It was thought that overly frequent washing was damaging to the hair, and at that time, many new and "improved" shampoos were introduced that could be used every day. Now, we're beginning to realize that the old ways of thinking we're actually true. If you've been having any kind of trouble with your hair, you may be washing it too much or using products that are too harsh for your hair. Read on these simple tips to find out the easy way to take good care of your hair.

1. Don't wash tangled hair. Comb or brush your hair gently, yet thoroughly, before washing your hair. Make sure that you are not tearing and damaging your hair as you wash. This will make it easier to comb out afterward. You may want to comb your hair in the shower or under the bath water during your final rinse.

2. Once your hair is combed and brushed, soak it with warm water. Don't use water that is too hot because this can damage your scalp, strip natural oils, and in turn, cause excessive oil production. Use water with a moderate temperature.

3. Use a gentle, natural shampoo. Avoid shampoo that contains sodium lauryl sulfate. This harsh chemical damages hair and can even cause nerve damage. Stroke the shampoo through your hair gently, scrubbing lightly with your fingertips at the scalp. You don't have to scrub your hair, and it is not necessary to produce a lot of bubbles and suds. Just stroke the shampoo through your hair and then rinse it out thoroughly with clean water.

4. Follow up with a mild conditioner, or if you have oily hair, try using a quart of water with a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar mixed in. It is not necessary to rinse this out. It will add shine, help soften your hair and condition your scalp without adding oils. Don't worry, your hair will not smell like vinegar!

5. If your hair becomes oily between shampoos, try sprinkling a little cornstarch on it. You can put cornstarch in a shaker and shake it onto your hair. Let it sit for five minutes, then massage your hair with your fingers and follow up by brushing thoroughly with a natural bristle brush to remove all the cornstarch. You will be amazed by how clean and full your hair looks!

By treating your hair gently and not washing your hair excessively, you will surely see an improvement in the condition of your hair and scalp soon. Not washing your hair every day may take a little getting used to, but once you have become used to it, you will surely see the benefits of the gentle treatments mentioned above.
